MAY SERVICE HIGHLIGHT: PATIOS
By Frank Stewart, Landscape Manager
After the flurry of gardening activity that proceeds Mother’s Day, it’s time to take a breath and consider how you are going to enjoy all of your efforts during the summer months. You may have considered adding a patio to the back yard. The first and most important step is site selection. Choose a location for your patio that is convenient and comfortable to use and allows the patio surface to drain. The next decision is selection of the material. We promote the use of permeable surfaces such as natural flagstone and pavers. It’s even more ecologically sound if you utilize a locally quarried Ohio flagstone. The installation process does not require any concrete or mortar so it is able to flex with the seasonal freeze and thaw without cracking and breaking. The single most critical phrase of the project is the development of the compacted crushed limestone base. I have learned over many years of experience that the quality of the base will determine the life and functionality of the entire job. Contact our Landscape Department if you would like help planning or installing a new patio to enjoy this summer and for years to come.
