MARVINS ORGANIC GARDENS RECEIVES OHIO EPA COMPOSTING GRANT
We are excited to tell you about our recently acquired compost machinery to help better serve you and the community. We received a Ohio EPA composting grant this year which enabled us to purchase new composting technology which has revolutionized the way we recycle organic debris. The goal of this new tool acquisition is to speed up production and to begin recycling food waste from local area restaurants, hospitals and grocery stores. Kroger’s is one of the supermarket chains we are working with. The companies first food scrap composting program was rolled out in 24 Ohio stores. In just four months, more than 650 tons of food waste were diverted from landfills and instead composted. There is an estimated 26 million tons of food waste generated in the U.S. each year. In the state of Ohio, 97% of food waste goes right to the landfill, all of which could be recycled, freeing up much needed space in our already overloaded landfills.
With our new state-of-the-art 600 Series Vermeer Grinder, we can take food waste, waste wood, and other bulky organic debris and grind it to ¾” size pieces perfect for fast decomposition. This Vermeer Grinder also has the ability to make hardwood mulch from scrap wood and bark, which will help to keep our hardwood mulch prices lower than ever. Our new Wild Cat Trommel Screener has the ability to screen and process topsoil and compost into user friendly soil amendments quickly and efficiently. What used to take us a day to screen and process, now requires less than an hour of work. The result is that we will never run out of topsoil or compost again, or your next load is free! The biggest advantage of the Wild Cat Trommel Screener is that it takes bulky soil materials that are impossible to spread, and separates the finer soil for a more user friendly end product for you. Lastly, as part of the Ohio EPA compost grant, we were able to purchase a Case 721 Loader which is large enough to load the new screener and grinder with. Also, this loader is useful in turning our compost windrows to help expedite decomposition of organic debris.
